In order to have Borderline Personality Disorder

one must meet five of seven criteria.

Could It Be Something Else?

It may be helpful to be aware of other possible causes of you or a loved one's behaviors. Even though someone may show signs of Borderline Personality Disorder, this may not necessarily mean he or she has it. For instance, signs of impulsivity, chronic feelings of emptiness, or addiction may be caused by the need for structure, discipline, or sense of purpose or meaning in one's life. It could also be the result of a spiritual confusion or conflict, the death of a loved one, or a divorce or break-up. Likewise, having low self-esteem or abandonment issues could be the result of abuse, co-dependency, or poor attachment with the caregiver as a child. And finally, anger, rage, or mood swings could mean a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder.
